Preparing For Your University’s Disciplinary Board
Criminal charges can have lasting impacts on college students beyond just adding a blemish to their record. They can also affect their standing at their college or university. Depending on the school’s code of conduct, the student may face suspension or expulsion if charged with a crime.
I am attorney George F. Hildebrandt, and I can help protect college students from penalties imposed by their university. With more than 30 years of experience representing college students in Syracuse and the surrounding areas of New York, I can help ensure you and your child are ready for the road ahead.
Helping You Defend Yourself
Unfortunately, many schools do not allow lawyers to play a large role in disciplinary hearings. Although this means I may not be able to accompany your son or daughter to a hearing, I can provide extensive guidance before the hearing so they feel confident and prepared when it comes time to address the disciplinary board.
A few ways I can help are:
- Providing a road map of the process. Most schools follow similar disciplinary processes. I will explain how it works and what you can expect.
- Identifying mitigating factors. I will carefully review the case and determine the best opportunities for challenging a suspension or expulsion. Maybe the field sobriety tests were administered improperly, or maybe your child’s car was illegally searched.
- Coaching you on how to address the board. I will help students understand how best to interact with the members of the disciplinary board during the hearing and in any pre-hearing meetings. We will walk through possible questions they may face, and help determine how best to respond.
